Limited Time Offer: Physical Access Pass NFTs

Toronto, Canada

For a limited time Mogul is offering Access Pass purchasers the option to receive the physical version of their NFT

Mogul Productions, the decentralized film financing (DeFiFi) platform and movie-based NFT marketplace is offering physical representations of their Access Passes for purchasers for a limited time.

From now until April 12th, all Access Pass purchasers will have the opportunity to redeem a physical version of their NFT to display in their home.

Each physical token will be linked to the digital NFT token on the blockchain and have verified authenticity.

The Access Passes have functional value within our platform, where holders can have greater access to rewards, events, and more. Now, each Access Pass holder’s NFT will also have memorabilia value, where they can be proudly displayed in their physical version.

Digital artwork has exploded in popularity, and we’re excited to provide even more utility for our NFTs to our users. Beeple is another artist who has matched his digital tokens with physical versions. If you’re curious to see an example of a physical token NFT, watch this video of a Beeple unboxing.

Pictured above is the Mogul Genesis NFT in the same frame that the Access Passes will be delivered in. The limited time offer is for the Access Passes and not the Mogul Genesis NFTs.

Click here to see our Founder & President, Lisa Sun, give a video update and show a sample of the physical NFT tokens

Users who have already purchased an Access Pass are also eligible for this promotion. Email [email protected] with your Mogul username, the type of Access Pass you purchased, and indicate that you’d like to receive the physical version.

As we all know, the global supply chain has been disrupted due to COVID-19 and, most recently, the Suez Canal blockage. Mogul is a global community with users from countries all around the world, so when we are shipping physical items across the world there is a high likelihood of shipping delays. Remain patient with our team and we will work hard to get everyone their physical packages in a timely manner.

We will be reaching out to each Access Pass purchaser individually for their shipping address via email.

Sincerely,

The Mogul Team

Introducing Mogul Growth Farming

Toronto, Canada

Introducing the STARS Master Chef Contracts and Mogul Growth Farming; exclusively on the Mogul platform in collaboration with the Uniswap protocol

According to Dune Analytics, Uniswap currently has over 300,000 monthly active users. Throughout the month of March, the protocol was adding nearly 2000 new farmers per day. Uniswap is the leading product in DeFi and we’re excited to announce the Mogul Growth Farming program to attract these users to the Mogul ecosystem and bring us one step closer to harnessing the power of the crowd and using crowd intelligence from STARS holders to make fan-driven and transparent independent films.

Mogul Growth Farming, which is a fork of Sushi Master Chef, will allow Mogul community members to earn more STARS over the course of the next few months by staking their tokens. Inspiration for this contract was taken from Sushiswap, who had the most successful user acquisition oriented farming campaign in the history of blockchain.

The audit of the contract was performed by Zokyo Labs and can be seen here.

STARS Master Chef will have two pools:

  1. STARS only pool: a pool where users can directly stake their STARS tokens
  2. STARS_ETH pool: a pool where Uniswap liquidity providers can stake their STARS_ETH tokens

A total of 40 million STARS tokens will be distributed to Mogul users through this growth campaign. 90% of the rewards will be distributed to the STARS_ETH pool and 10% of the rewards will be distributed to the STARS pool.

10% of STARS will be given to participants over a 3–4 month period.

The campaign happens in 3 phases, where fewer STARS tokens are given to supporters over time. This allows early adopters to earn more rewards from the respective pools that they participate in, and encourages more users to join the Mogul ecosystem and take part in the community-building activities that Mogul has to offer from an early stage.

Rewards are issued “pro rata” to pool participants. For example, during Phase 1, 20 STARS tokens are issued per Ethereum block to participants. Ethereum blocks happen approximately every 15 seconds and there are about 5760 ETH blocks per day, so for every block that you’re active in the pool, you will accrue STARS tokens that you can claim when you exit the pool.

Let’s use a simple example for the STARS pool with 2 participants named Alice and Bob.

  • Alice has 100 STARS in the pool
  • Bob has 900 STARS in the pool
  • The total pool is therefore 1000 STARS
  • Bob represents 90% of the pool and Alice represents 10% of the pool

If all variables stay the same from block to block, Alice will receive 2 STARS per block and Bob will receive 18 STARS per block. Each time a new participant joins the pools then the variables are changed to recalculate the share of the rewards that each participant can claim.

The STARS Master Chef contract is an Ethereum-based contract, which means that the campaign will be for STARS ERC20 tokens and STARS_ETH holders that receive these tokens from the Uniswap protocol for providing tokens to the ETH_STARS pool on Uniswap.

How It Works:

The image above displays information for illustrative purposes only. It is a mock up

Requirements:

  1. Own STARS tokens
  2. Have them in your Metamask wallet
  3. Be signed up at my.mogulproductions.com

Option 1: STARS only pool

  1. Connect your Metamask Wallet to the Mogul platform
  2. Click “Farming” in the sidebar of the Mogul platform once you are logged in
  3. Click “Approve” on the STARS pool contract. This is an Ethereum contract that is for your security and thus requires the user to make a transaction and pay the gas fees associated with the transaction.
  4. Click “Stake” and enter the amount of STARS tokens you wish to stake

The image above displays information for illustrative purposes only. It is a mock up

  1. The user will see the total amount of rewards that they have accrued from being in the pool and the total amount they have staked, as well as the reward rate that they are receiving on the STARS they have staked
  2. If the user wants to Claim or Unstake their tokens this is also a blockchain operation that will require the user to pay gas fees. When a user unstakes or claims their STARS tokens the total amount owed to the user is returned to their Metamask wallet. Claiming the tokens will allow the user to withdraw only their accrued rewards, whereas unstaking will withdraw all of their STARS in the pool and the accrued rewards that they have accumulated

Option 2: STARS_ETH Pool

If you’re unfamiliar with how Uniswap liquidity pools work, please watch this video that will show you how to use liquidity pools.

Reminder: anyone, including scammers, can post tokens on Uniswap. They may look like STARS tokens, but they may not be official. To receive the official address and link to any Uniswap pools or contracts ONLY follow links shared directly by official Mogul accounts. The best place for information is the Mogul Twitter account.

As a user, when you provide liquidity to Uniswap, you will receive an ERC20 token that represents your claim on the Uniswap-specific pool. You will need to check the Etherscan transaction after providing to the pool and add the new token to your Metamask. The Metamask UI will show it as a “UNI-V2” token

To participate in the STARS_ETH pool, now that you have the STARS_ETH token, follow the same steps as above:

  1. Connect your Metamask wallet (required for staking)
  2. Approve the pool (gas required)
  3. Stake your STARS_ETH tokens

After following these three steps you’ll be able to see the total rewards you have earned each time you revisit the platform. You can “Claim” rewards any time to either save your STARS or stake them into another pool to earn more, or you can withdraw your stake at any time.

How To Work On Your Movies During The Coronavirus Epidemic

The total number of COVID-19 cases is rising by the day. Lockdowns have been placed all across the world to contain the spread of the virus. It seems this could become the new normal for some time.

Coronavirus has halted the productivity of all major industries and the film industry is no exception. Shoots for both independent and major Hollywood feature films, which rely more and more on travel and a global network of workers, have been indefinitely put on hold.

In such an environment, how do you, as a filmmaker, best spend your time in isolation? Filmmaking is such an inherently collaborative process that it seems impossible to imagine being able to be productive in these times.

But, this is not necessarily true! Many parts of the filmmaking process are typically done in isolation. This time is how you choose to make it! Here are our 5 tips to screenwriters to stay productive during this lockdown:

  1. Screenwriting: Every great film starts with a script and luckily, you can start writing your script in isolation! Use the time to your advantage. Finish that script, watch Youtube videos from your favorite creators for inspiration, and write every single day! Check out 750 Words for inspiration on writing each morning.
  2. Order DIY filmmaking equipment: If Robert Rodriguez’s book Rebel Without a Crew teaches us anything, it is that a film can be made for any budget! We live in an era where film equipment has never been more affordable. The rise of social media video allows the short subject format to thrive on platforms from YouTube to Vimeo and now Instagram and Tik Tok. If a DSLR is out of your reach, your smartphone can most likely film in 4K at 30 fps, all you need now is a tripod to stabilize the image! If Adobe Premiere or Final Cut Pro is out of your budget range, Davinci Resolve is free. Film shorts at home or your apartment building.
  3. Take online courses: Whether you feel you want to be a better director, marketer, screenwriter or video editor, schools and MOOCs are now focusing their resources on their online offerings and offering steep discounts. The opportunities to learn online in this digital era are endless.
  4. Remote work: The risk involved with in-person work will inevitably create a boom in freelance and remote work. Sites like Entertainment Careers and Mandy are rife with opportunities worth considering, and sites such as Fiverr and Upwork can help you hone in on your filmmaking skills. Even Mogul is looking for talented filmmakers to help us create short form video!
  5. Pitch and promote your creative work online to platforms like Mogul! If you are scriptwriter, storyboarder or making DIY films, now is a perfect time to create pitches, concept work to share on social media, short concept trailers on YouTube and use your disposable income to create digital campaigns for your work with the intention of pitching them to investors and potential fans. Hollywood may still source their ideas internally but the world outside of it uses the Internet to find the next big thing. Self-isolation and quarantine mean that your first big investor is more likely to stumble across your work online rather than merely relying on her or his in-person network to field new ideas for films, which is how many tend to operate under normal circumstances.
  6. Let Mogul help you with this! Mogul is specifically built to help make Hollywood more accessible to anyone — anywhere in the world.

The attention economy has been shifting towards the digital world over the past decade and such a shift will only be accelerated by COVID-19. For the entrepreneurial and artistically-inclined, this could be a big opportunity to master our time and producitivty and learn the ins and outs of promoting one’s works in the online world to catch a big break for when the pandemic gets contained.

Let Mogul help you.

I am Mogul. We are Mogul.

How to Purchase a Mogul Access Pass

BEVERLY HILLS, CA

Step-by-step instructions to purchase your Access Pass tier (or STARS) and what to expect

Purchases will go live at 9am EDT on March 25th.

Step 1: Sign up to my.mogulproductions.com

Step 2: Enter the verification code sent to your email

Step 3: Click the Access Passes

Step 4: Click “BUY” on the Access Pass you want to purchase

Step 4B: Select the “Top Up” tier if you only want to purchase STARS

This is if you want to top up your balance with STARS and spend less than 1 ETH

Input either the number of STARS you want to purchase, or the amount of ETH you want to spend.

After you’ve selected the amount of STARS you want to purchase, click OK to proceed to the next screen.

Step 5: Select the wallet you want to make the purchase with

Purchases are only made with Ethereum (ETH) so you must have Ethereum in your wallet to pay for the cost of the Access Pass and the gas fee required to send the transaction. You can connect your Metamask wallet directly to the Mogul platform; this is recommended. Do not send a transaction from an exchange.

When you click to connect your wallet, you must first approve the ability for your wallet to communicate with Mogul. Then, click the Metamask symbol a second time to initiate the transaction.

Step 6: Complete your purchase

If you are making the purchase from your Metamask wallet, you will have a pop-up on your browser. You need to confirm the transaction and ensure that the transaction has enough gas to go through. Our friends at Cryptobriefing have written a great tutorial on how to use Metamask here.

If you are making the purchase from a different wallet (do not send from an exchange wallet) it is a similar process. Click the wallet you want to use, or scan the QR code with the Wallet Connect link to connect your mobile wallet.

You must purchase the exact price of your tier plus the gas fee required to make the transaction go through. Learn more about gas here.

Your wallet will send you confirmation of your purchase. Please ensure that you have sent enough gas for the transaction to go through and monitor the transaction to make sure it is confirmed.

Step 7: Find your STARS

After your transaction is confirmed your STARS will be immediately sent to your wallet, but they will be paused until the campaign is over. You will be able to see your locked STARS in your Mogul Dashboard to show that the transaction was confirmed. You can also check Etherscan to see that the STARS are in your wallet.

If you’re using Metamask and don’t see your STARS — don’t worry. You just need to enable STARS through your wallet. Learn how here.

The STARS token contract is: 0xc55c2175E90A46602fD42e931f62B3Acc1A013Ca

To add this to your Metamask wallet, click Add Token:

Then, click Custom Token, and paste the contract address above in the field. The Token Symbol will automatically show up as STARS and the Decimals of Precision will be 18.

As soon as your purchase is confirmed you will see the number of STARS you purchased in your Mogul Dashboard:

Step 8: Find your Non-Fungible Token

Once your transaction is confirmed, head to your Mogul Profile and you’ll see the file for your NFT sitting in your profile!

The token representing your NFT will be distributed to every user on the platform when Mogul deploys live on the Polygon network with our Smart Wallet that offers users gasless transactions and decentralized recoverability.

Answers to other frequently asked questions:

Q: When will I receive the physical items included in my Access Pass purchase?

A: The Mogul team will follow up with each Access Pass purchaser within one week of the end of the Sale to gather shipping information. Due to the global nature of Mogul, we cannot guarantee delivery times but we hope that shipments are fast!

Q: When will I be able to spend my STARS to submit scripts or purchase rewards?

A: You can submit scripts and spend your STARS immediately when they are unlocked. You can also purchase rewards by contacting the Mogul team directly if you’re very interested in an item in the Rewards Marketplace. More options to spend STARS will be available each month in a phased approach and we will continue to offer rewards and NFT drops that our community wants!

Other roadmap details, such as the first voting round, date of the staking contract, and more will be published soon. We know that our community is eager for exact dates and details and we’re working hard to provide our community with the information that they want! We’re so excited with the interest thus far and will continue to be community minded to give the most up to date information as soon as we have it!

How to Buy Stars on Binance Smart Chain (BSC)

The STARS token is going live on Binance Smart Chain (BSC) on July 15, 2021. Buying STARS on BSC might seem difficult or unfamiliar to you if you’re used to training through the Ethereum ecosystem.

Don’t worry. Using BSC is actually really easy, which means the path to lower fees and faster transaction speeds is right around the corner. You’ll feel especially competent after you finish reading this quick guide. We promise!

Getting BNB Tokens Is the First Step

BSC and Binance use the Binance Coin (BNB) to run, just like Ethereum uses Ether tokens. Acquiring BNB tokens can be done on any number of exchanges. BNB is one of the most popular cryptocurrencies in the world by market capitalization after all. The most obvious way to get BNB tokens is to use Binance.

Log into your account, trade whatever currency you wish to part ways with in exchange for BNB tokens and viola!

Send BNB tokens to your MetaMask Wallet

Before you send your BNB tokens to your MetaMask wallet, you have to keep in mind that MetaMask defaults to the Ethereum blockchain because the wallet was originally built to serve just that. Nowadays you can switch your MetaMask wallet to BSC easily.

Simply click Ethereum Mainnet at the top of the MetaMask interface to trigger the drop-down and switch your network.

In order make the switch official, there are several empty fields that you have to fill in with specific parameters that relate to the BSC blockchain. Get that information by reading a guide for how to add BSC to your MetaMask wallet. The guide can be found right here.

Go to ApeSwap to initiate a BNB to STARS Transaction

Go to ApeSwap.Finance and click the Trade option and the left-hand menu to initiate a transaction for BNB in exchange for STARS.

Making the transaction is as simple as choosing BNB in the “Swap From:” field and STARS in the “Swap To:” field. The first time you make a trade on the platform, STARS won’t come out by default so you need the Binance contract address for STARS in order to add it to the ApeSwap platform as an option. See the screenshot below:

ApeSwap Interface

Simply click “Select a Token” under the “Swap To:” option and paste the following BSC STARS contract address into the address field:

BSC STARS contract address: 0xbd83010eb60f12112908774998f65761cf9f6f9a

Keep in mind that the STARS contract address above only works with BSC. The contract address for STARS living on the Ethereum blockchain is different from the above. DO NOT send ERC-20 STARS tokens to a BSC address or vice versa. Your tokens will be lost forever. Always make sure you’re using the contract address that matches the blockchain your STARS belong to.

Confirm Your Transaction to Get Your Stars

With BNB and STARS now selected in the appropriate swapping fields, you can make your transaction. As soon as you initiate it, your MetaMask wallet will pop up and ask you to confirm the gas fee you’re willing to pay.

You’ll notice of the be much lower than what you’re used to paying on the Ethereum network. That’s the major benefit of using BSC in the first place so don’t worry if something looks wrong. Everything is fine, you’re simply saving on fees just like you deserve to.

Your BSC STARS tokens will appear in your wallet shortly.  There you have it. You officially know how to get STARS tokens through BSC.

How Quadratic Voting & Blockchain Could Have Improved the 2020 Election

Regardless of affiliation or country, the accuracy of the voting process across the world is a question that remains on a lot of people’s mind. Problems came into question from many political parties about voter suppression, lost ballots, accusations of fraud, and long delays in election results.

Want to learn about how Mogul is using quadratic voting to improve the voting process? Visit our website to learn more.

Quadratic Voting & Blockchain’s Combined Potential

In the days following the 2020 election, crypto industry experts like Ethereum Founder, Vitalik Buterin, and Binance’s CEO Changpeng Zhao both commented on the opportunity for blockchain-based voting. Buterin stated that there is a potential to onboard a quarter billion people in just a few years.

“Develop something good now, get it approved (obviously hardest step), and get 300 million plus (fully KYC’d) users in 4 years time.” — Vitalik Buterin said on Twitter.

How Mogul Quadratic Voting Works

At Mogul, we developed a framework called Mogul Quadratic Voting that has the potential to usher in the next era of blockchain-voting to the film industry and beyond. Mogul Quadratic Voting is a secure and fair way to carry out full voting campaigns online.

Benefits of Mogul’s Quadratic Voting System:

  • Prevents Vote Buying
  • Decreases voter Apathy
  • Encourages Community-Based Governance
  • Restricts Wealth Dominance

Mogul initiates a voting round by issuing voting credits to the token holders on the platform. The token holders then use the tokens to vote on what films and governance proposals they want to support.

Visit Mogul’s website to learn more.

How can Mogul Quadratic Voting & Blockchain Achieve Fair Voter Representation?

To give smaller token holders an equal voice to larger ones, all votes are counted using a quadratic voting formula. By using this formula, each vote becomes exponentially more expensive to cast and holds less weight. Mogul Quadratic Voting is set up to incentivize token holders to vote on movies and governance proposals in a fair way.

The overall framework promotes community-based governance and decision making. That’s not something that can be said for the election process across the world today!

Quadratic Voting: A Secure and Fair Voting Framework

Mogul Quadratic Voting allows token holders and film fans alike to vote with their tokens… but there’s a caveat. We give a voice to all fans and creators, not just the ones with the most money.

If you want to learn more about how blockchain can be used for film, visit our website.

In Closing

As the centralized processes of the physical world become increasingly compromised, the world’s most forward-thinking innovators are building solutions to make the world a better place. Blockchain developers believe that decentralized technology could be used to enhance the voting process.

The Mogul Quadratic Voting system is the next generation blockchain solution for building a secure and fair voting process online. Quadratic Voting delivers a representative process that allows voters of all sizes to have an equal say. Visit our website today to learn more.

Mogul Productions, established 2019, is a blockchain-based film finance and production company with a presence in Canada, the United States of America and Europe. Mogul’s platform connects contributors, film industry professionals, and fans through technology that allows all users to engage and participate with each project throughout their entire lifecycle, from financing through to production and distribution.

How to Bridge Your STARS Tokens to Binance Smart Chain (BSC)

STARS tokens are going to be available on Binance Smart Chain (BSC) as of July 15, 2021. By default, STARS are ERC-20 compliant, meaning they live on the Ethereum blockchain.

That means in order to hold and trade STARS on BSC, you need to trade in your Ether-friendly STARS for ones that are BEP-20 compliant.

Remember, you also need to be able to do the reverse and bridge BEP-20 STARS back over to ERC-20 because using STARS for voting or staking on the Mogul platform can only be done with the ERC-20 version.

Here’s exactly how to bridge your STARS tokens in six easy steps.

Step 1: Go to AnySwap.Exchange

Anyswap.exchange does exactly what the name says. It allows you to swap almost any digital currency for one of a different format. Click here to get to the website and get to the exact page for swapping the STARS currency pairing.

Here’s exactly what the page looks like:

Step 2: Decide Which Way You Want to Complete the Swap

If you have BEP-20 STARS and want to convert them into ERC-20 STARS, you need to choose the option to Redeem your tokens by toggling the menu to the top right of the screen. If you’re trading ERC-20 STARS for BEP-20 STARS, choose the deposit option. See the screenshot below:

Step 3: Choose the Right Blockchain Network within Your MetaMask Wallet

No matter what you’re doing, your MetaMask wallet always has to be set to the right blockchain network. If you select your wallet by clicking the fox icon that represents your MetaMask Google plugin and get a “Wrong Network” message, it means you need to either switch to Binance or Ethereum, depending on whether you are redeeming or depositing tokens in the step above.

If you don’t know how to connect MetaMask to BSC, check out this guide offered by Binance. See the screenshot below for further guidance:

Step 4: Initiate the Bridge Transaction

Enter the number of STARS tokens you want to trade and hit Cross-chain Deposit/Redeem. You need to swap at least 1,260 tokens in order for your transaction to go through.

Step 5: Confirm Your Transaction via MetaMask

AnySwap will accept your transaction, but that doesn’t mean you’re done. Once you initiate the cross-chain exchange, you’ll need to confirm it through MetaMask.

Make sure you have a minimum of 0.02 ETH in order to complete the transaction because you do need to pay a fee to the network.

Step 6: Check to See That Your Bridge Transaction Is Complete

Now that you’ve looked at your MetaMask wallet and confirmed your transaction, you can click on the STARS token to the far right to see when you’ve successfully bridged your tokens. Make sure you check that before you leave the page so that you don’t get caught having to do the transaction again.

You can now be fully confident in bridging your tokens from BSC to Ethereum and vice versa. Join us as we launch on BSC on July 15, 2021 and give you, the STARS token holder with the lower fees and faster speeds that BSC provides and that movie fans like you deserve.

How Films “Deadpool” and “Sonic The Hedgehog” Prove That a Strong Community Can Make or Break a Movie (And How Blockchain Can Help)

One of the most underestimated and underserved parts of the film industry is the power of the crowd. A strong community behind a big-ticket Hollywood project is powerful enough to demand changes to a film’s production design, or even transform the way a character is animated.

To see the power of community in film, look no further than Deadpool ($783.1M box office making it the highest-grossing R-rated franchise ever) or Sonic the Hedgehog (which also had a wildly successful $306.8 million tenure in the box office). Mogul advisor, Emmy-Winner and Oscar-Nominated Producer Cindy Cowan (Miracle on 42nd Street, Smiley) shared her behind-the-scenes knowledge of the way that crowds impacted the production of these two films.

At Futurist Conference 2020, Cowan spoke about a prior conversation she had with Deadpool director Tim Miller (Terminator: Dark Fate, Thor: The Dark World) as well as other Hollywood insider info.

Find out more about the panel right here.

Massive Opportunity: A Platform That Brings Communities Together with Key Hollywood Stakeholders

Both Deadpool and Sonic demonstrate that there is a demand for fans to come together to make decisions about and participate in films from a script level; together. However, this demand is currently under-served. There isn’t a platform that allows fans to contribute, collaborate, and vote on films to be part of the process and feel a sense of ownership over the content. Mogul helps to revolutionize the decision-making and funding process for films.

Cowan’s inside knowledge of the way that film communities have transformed Hollywood has steered her insight with Mogul. The power of Mogul’s platform has the potential to give film fans a voice in the script-to-screen process. Mogul does this by curating a fan base for independent films where filmmakers and stakeholders can make governance decisions side-by-side. Mogul’s platform uses blockchain technology to build an incentive-based community that results in a higher ROI for filmmakers.

Deadpool’s director Tim Miller told Cowan that the film almost wasn’t made with Ryan Reynolds (The Proposal, Green Lantern) had it not been for the demands of the comic book’s pre-existing community. They loved Reynolds. They loved his obsessing and dedication to making a film that was true to the comic book.

“Deadpool and Sonic changed the way studios looked at the film industry,” Cowan said. “Tim Miller, the director, was telling me this story that is quite astounding. A lot of people know that Deadpool was a comic book that was around for years and years, but Ryan Reynolds made his debut as his Deadpool character in “X Men: Wolverine.” But when he did, that character was this weird mismatch that made no sense. The studio didn’t look at Deadpool to do anything else,” Cowan said. “The fans of Deadpool were upset because that was not the Deadpool that they liked,” she said.

The fans were even specific about Deadpool’s eye color. While some Ryan Reynolds fans might have been upset that they couldn’t see his blue eyes, Deadpool comic book fans wanted the eyes to be white and authentic.

“Ryan Reynolds was originally going to wear the mask of Deadpool but even have his beautiful blue eyes. Even down to the eyes, which most people don’t realize, became these white eyes that [you can see] in the comic,” she said. They changed and they said nope, we don’t want these blue eyes, we want the white eyes, so they changed it,” Cowan said.

Loyal Film Communities Crave & Recognize Authenticity (And Want to Be Part of the Process)

Cowan spoke about the importance of previews and a leaked Deadpool trailer that featured Reynolds. The community of fans loved the previews and lead-up to the film that 20th Century had no choice but to push it through to production with Reynolds in it.

“There were billboards everywhere,” Cowan said. “Things were getting leaked more because we were horrified. The studio, thinking they might do Deadpool, didn’t want Ryan Reynolds. They come out with the Green Lantern, it failed. He had already played Deadpool in X Men, it failed,” Cowan said. “They tried to replace him with all these A-list actors. But the fans were not having it. Ryan released all these amazing marketing things. He was passionate about it. He was a fan. Tim Miller was a fan,” Cowan said.

Reynolds’ Dedication to Work for the Comicbook Community of Deadpool

It was the recognition of Reynolds and Miller’s love for the comic book that made comic book fans love them.

“The fans literally pushed Deadpool through to Fox,” Cowan said.

“And 24 hours later, Deadpool was green lit. With Tim and Ryan. It’s an amazing, amazing, amazing fan-driven story,” Cowan said.

As a fan of the comic book himself, Ryan Reynolds was in it for the long-haul. He had been working on producing the film for over a decade. The community recognized that and immediately hyped the idea of Reynolds doing it.

“Ryan Reynolds spent 11 years trying to make this movie. 11 years. They did test screenings, they did character building, they did all these kinds of things, and nobody to this day knows how the test screening of Deadpool got leaked,” Cowan said. “Somebody leaked it. And when they leaked it… they loved it. And Ryan Reynolds started doing these weird marketing campaigns that we have never seen,” Cowan said. “This was an R-rated movie and we never saw a superhero this R-rated and the campaigns were incredibly R-rated,” Cowan said.

Again, the R-rated aspect of Deadpool’s character and marketing was what catapulted the franchise to become the highest-grossing R-rated franchise… ever. Almost $1B in the box office… kudos!

How Sonic Comicbook Fans Changed Sonic the Hedgehog

Similar to Deadpool, comic book fans of Sonic guided production decisions of the movie. Cowan spoke about how the fans had waited for so long for the movie to come out, and when they saw what Sonic looked like, they were so vehemently disappointed about the design that their outcry changed the film.

“When the trailer came out, the studio had no idea what was about to happen,” Cowan said. “Sonic was a character that was created this go-around with teeth and with little beady eyes. It had the body of a 10-year old boy,” she said.

The fans became infatuated with that version of Sonic.

“Fans that waited years and years for Sonic to come out wanted their character with these big cartoonish eyes, if they weren’t gonna have that character, they literally said to the studio that we are not coming to the theater,” Cowan said.

The studio was left with very little choice after they heard the fan’s backlash. The studio chiefs didn’t want to disappoint the community. They had to listen.

“The studio had spent so much money on Sonic that they had no choice to go back and create the original character that the fans wanted. That’s what they [the fans] waited for,” Cowan said.

These films demonstrate more than anything that film community is everything. When you’re creating a film, you need to be true to what the community wants. If you do it correctly, it has the potential to pay off to the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars.

Given this tremendous opportunity, there is an under-served need within Hollywood.

Mogul fills this void as an immersive, transparent, next-generation platform for fans to come together.

How Blockchain Can Build a Community for Film Fans that Improves the Script-to-Screen Process

The idea of film and decentralized finance excites Hollywood producer and Mogul production advisor David Cormican (Northern Rescue, Tokyo Trial). He spoke on the same panel alongside Cindy Cowan about the potential for blockchain, DeFi and film communities.

Cormican was excited about blockchain’s potential to make movies more fan-driven like Deadpool and Sonic.

“That’s the quintessential example right there. Why we haven’t been listening to fans for years and mobilizing those voices is beyond me. That’s what is super exciting with Tracy and the rest of the team with the tech side sort of came to us with this notion of marrying the two. Super exciting,” Cormican said.

Mogul: A Community-Based Platform for Films

During the same conversation, Mogul CMO Tracy Leparulo spoke about the opportunity to improve the film industry. Mogul’s compass is focused on improving the community.

“A few things Cindy was talking about… how do we bring the fans together, and how do we connect fans with industry, and then ideally with people who can contribute. The technology has some really cool features to it,” Leparulo said. “One of the first I love are the Monoplasma Rewards: Similar to gamification and what’s going on at Futurist, this allows for incentivization and rewards on the platform. One of the top ones would be top-producing credits in a movie.

Voting is another aspect of Mogul’s platform that Leparulo is excited about. With Mogul Quadratic Voting, Mogul is positioning itself to be the top choice for community-driven decisions in movies for the film industry. It can be the place where the involved parties from a movie get together and make governance decisions.

“Another cool thing is called Quadratic Voting. Being able to vote is very important. As Cindy was saying with Sonic, the fans didn’t like how the character looks, they all voiced their opinion. In the Mogul platform, people are able to essentially voice their opinion. They do this through a voting mechanism. Quadratic Voting ensures somebody with the most money doesn’t have the most say on how it’s made.”

In Conclusion

The unimaginable amount of success from the films Deadpool and Sonic who combined grossed over a billion at the box office have made it more than obvious that film communities decide the fate of films.

Now, Hollywood and the movie industry all around the world could use a solution that brings film communities together. A company that can pull this off has the potential to meet one of the largest underserved needs in Hollywood. Mogul aims to be the go-to platform for the film industry by using blockchain to create a community that film fans love but also find easy to use.

Mogul Productions, established 2019, is a blockchain-based film finance and production company with a presence in Canada, the United States of America, and Europe. From financing through to distribution, Mogul’s platform connects contributors, film industry professionals, and fans through technology that allows all users to engage and participate with each project throughout its entire lifecycle.

How Blockchain Will Change Film Distribution

The world has gone from the big blockbuster releases of movies like Harry Potter at midnight in theatres to families having 4 different streaming services with never-ending libraries. The film distribution process has changed dramatically over the last decade. The impact of the at-home, self-selection consumption model on the film industry is yet to be determined.

Yet, no matter the impact of streaming, there is no doubt that film distribution can benefit with more transparency. From the way that a film’s stakeholders get money, to piracy concerns, blockchain can ameliorate some of the largest money pits that the film industry currently faces.

At Mogul, we’re providing an entertainment platform that will deliver all the potential of DeFi to the film industry. Mogul allows filmmakers to go beyond centralized, massive production houses to a decentralized, accessible model.

In this article, we’ll talk about how blockchain can be used through the distribution process to provide transparency, including:

  • Stakeholder Fund Recoupment
  • Piracy Defence
  • IP Rights Protection

Blockchain and Film: Spending, Piracy, Protection

Overall, blockchain provides an element of transparency for film stakeholders that is unmatched by other modern technology. During the many stages of film production, deliverables can pass through multiple channels across a 2–3 year movie-making process. A blockchain can record all of these transactions. With that said, blockchain answers the main question that film stakeholders want to know: how am I going to recoup my allocated resources?

While it might seem like a straightforward question for those familiar with investing in securities, Hollywood is much more opaque. The art of “Hollywood Accounting” is the creative practice that the film industry uses to keep profits and account for a film’s budget. In this process, expenditures are often inflated, and special deals are made to otherwise minimize the on-paper profits of the film. Sometimes this practice can hurt actors.

For example, the actor who played Darth Vader in the 1983 Star Wars film “Return of the Jedi” never received any residuals because the movie did not make a profit. Upon further examination, it seems sort of hard to wrap your head around that considering the movie made $475 million on a $32 million budget. However, incidents like this are not uncommon. The entire industry suffers from a serious lack of transparency.

However, just as blockchain can benefit a film’s stakeholders for transparency in spending, blockchain can also benefit those same stakeholders as a solution for the film industry’s rampant piracy issue.

With Mogul, predetermined profit-waterfalls are auditable on the blockchain, and dividends are disbursed according to audited, vetted, and transparent financials.

Piracy in Film

Emmy-Winner and Oscar-Nominated star Cindy Cowan spoke about how blockchain can help piracy in film. On a panel at Futurist Conference 2020, the producer, director, and investor spoke about her personal experience effectively having money stolen from her thanks to The Pirate Bay.

“My last movie… I don’t even know how much money I lost. There’s something called Pirate Bay and you can go on, and you can watch hundreds of millions of dollars evaporating. But on a blockchain, I can see exactly who might have pirated our movie. Every single transaction and every single distribution should be noted. And if it’s not noted, then everybody in that blockchain will be notified that there’s something wrong here,” Cowan said.

Changing the Distribution Model

In addition to piracy and spending transparency, the channels through which films are being distributed are also rapidly changing. What was once a big blockbuster theatrical release is now watched from the comfort of home via one of your streaming devices.

As streaming persists as the main distribution channel, there needs to be a more effective way of capturing the stream trail. In other words, how are content creators compensated for all of the streams of their content? Blockchain can add to this transparency. Netflix, for example, is notorious for keeping their streaming data close to their chest.

In Conclusion

Blockchain has a massive potential to usher in a new era of transparency into the film industry. From the way money is spent in calculating a film’s profit, to eliminating the hundreds of millions of dollars being evaporated from piracy, to correctly attributing views to content creators, blockchain has the potential to transform the film industry.
