How Films Connect with Audiences – What We Can Learn From This, How it Shapes the Way We Operate

While the medium of publicity in the early era of the film industry transitioned quickly – from street hawkers soliciting passersby to attend moving picture shows, to print ads, to brochures, to radio ads, to the modern movie preview as we know it – there has not been much innovation in the way that films have connected with audiences.

In other words, the film fan has largely been left out of the film-making process through the movie industry’s 130-year history. However, a growing movement that Mogul is pioneering, known as Film3, is about to transform the film industry, making films more community-driven.

History of Film Advertising and Publicity

In the early days of the movie industry, there were street hawkers on corners and traveling showmen offering a program of “moving pictures.” These people would attract an audience and crowd, spreading the invention of the movie through word of mouth. They would travel from one place to the next, film-in-hand, getting people to try the new invention.

Soon thereafter, movies were advertised through text-heavy slides in the pre-cinema era.

Pictures or actual film footage was hardly used in this early era. Some of the first films that used an actual scene or picture from the film in the advertisement were films from notable backgrounds, usually with biblical or literary notoriety. The pictures featured in these early films denoted the noteworthiness of the subject matter. Picture or not, these early films were featured in trade publications circa 1910, or they were passed around on quarter sheets outside of vaudeville houses, nickelodeons, or theaters.

Early movie theater posters began rolling out at the start of the 20th century. However, these posters showed moviegoers going to the movie. Meanwhile, the movie itself wasn’t prominently featured. Eventually, movie posters went on to include information about the film. Over time the film’s stars were centered on the posters during the days of Charlie Chaplin, Douglas Fairbanks, Rudolf Valentino, and Lillian Gish. A-list films also rolled out merchandise such as a fake hotel key with a tag promoting Chaplin’s film Hotel Imperial.

At this point, the film fan hardly knew what the movie was about, unless of course it dealt with a notable subject matter.

From Movie Posters to Previews

Early movie studios were mostly content with what is described as “narrow publicity.” There were newsletters and sheets such as Edison Kinetogram, the Kalem Kalendar, and the Lubin Bulletin (New York Times). These sheets would compile a few upcoming releases with a still from the movie, a title, and a plot summary. Distributors sent business letters and catalogs to theaters in advance of film releases. One letter offered a bonus to the Adele Theater in Eamon, Georgia… “the right to screen four films a week for $25 and an additional weekly newsreel for free (Economist).”

The modern preview (movie trailer) as we know it came into existence in 1913 because of Nils Granlund, the publicist and marketing director for the founder of MGM and Loews Theaters. Granlund, a Swedish-born former automobile race car driver, caught the attention of MGM and Loews Theater Founder Marcus Loew soon after Granlund pivoted his career into working for a local theater. Soon after Granlund began working for Loew, Granlund produced a promotional film for the movie The Pleasure Seekers.  A reporter from the Nebraska Daily Star was at the first preview and described it as “an entirely new stunt.”

This event started a nationwide trend that still exists in some form today. Although it may have been some time since you’ve seen a movie in a theater, rest-assured that there are trailers playing before the film that advertise other movies you may be interested in.

Scant on Detail

Many early movie previews up through the 1940s remained scant on the plot details, focusing more on the stars and special effects, “(giving away) as little as possible.” Early previews would give small windows into the movie but never give complete narratives away.

Over time, we’ve seen films divulge more and more of their plots to connect with audiences beforehand. While earlier films in the first days of cinema sold the attendees on the concept of going to the movie more than the movie itself, later stages of the industry divulged more and more of the plot.

The National Screen Service (NSS) started a half-century monopoly to promote films, and hence film trailers were monopolized. It signed exclusive contracts with all of the major movie production houses to hand out the posters and produce the posters as well. This kept film marketing the same through the 1980s. As the format of theaters transformed from individual screens to multi-screen, the available room for advertising shrunk. Resultantly, movie posters also decreased in size.

Although the mediums have changed, from radio and newspaper pre-film trailers and social media advertisements, the format of previews has largely stayed the same. Of course, there is more behind-the-scenes footage that we get from actors who post content on their Instagram or TikTok. There is also more of a focus for individual actors to connect with their communities to boost a film, drawing the audience in through related content, then having a link to their latest film in their bio (social media profile).

The Film Industry’s Impenetrable Gate

Previews of films have been historically limited. The production houses and creators tell us what to watch, and over time, more and more details about these films have come about. Yet, we are still only the end receivers. Film fans should be able to choose what they want to see from the ground up. However, generally speaking, films have largely been inaccessible to film fans before they have been created. Red carpet premieres and the glam of award shows add this larger-than-life element to Hollywood.

Besides a trip to Universal Studios or Disney World where you can ride on the attractions of some of your favorite films, there are very few opportunities to participate in the world of film for the average person. How more likely would you be to talk about a film if you’ve been involved in the process of making it, or if you were in the film yourself? Examples of some movies like Deadpool have compounded on this idea to create a community-led international phenomenon. Crypto is making community-led film initiatives even more possible.

Now, Film3 is getting people closer to the action. It gives the fans the ability to vote for what they want to see. In the earliest days of film, people would show up at the cinema and get whatever they were given. Marketing techniques merely dictated to people what they would watch. However, now marketing for films is about to totally change.

How NFTs can impact the Way Films Connect with Audiences

Crypto communities are transforming the world of film in three major ways:

  1. Community Centered: Films will become more community-centered, both from a production standpoint and an investor standpoint. The tokenization of the film will result in a community-governed format that has worked across other industries. People-led initiatives will increase the draw to films.
  2. Choosing-your-own-Adventure: The community-governed approach to filmmaking that is currently sweeping the industry will create a culture of choice. The community-bound investors can have a say over different production elements, even going as far as choosing the ending, actors, and crew. Film3 gets people closer to the action.
  3. Creating the Plot: Crypto communities serve as a natural evolution in the trajectory of divulging the plot to the audience before a film is created. While earlier movies did not reveal much in the way of the plot, and merely dictated to people what they had to watch, movies nowadays have behind-the-scenes footage on actors’ Instagrams. Crypto takes this concept of behind-the-scenes beforehand one step further. The technology allows for communities to co-create the films alongside production teams — this is similar to what we see in the video game industry where AAA quality games are being created with game developers, players, and investors sitting side-by-side next to the drawing board – from funding, to narrative, to the marketing plan, to the execution.

While there are many other ways that blockchain technology and crypto communities can enhance film, these are just a few that Mogul will specifically take on.

How Mogul is Leading the Charge with Film3

Mogul STARS Access Pass has different tiers that get you more and more access behind the scenes of our platform. Through our platform, members can submit movie ideas to producers, directors, and financial stakeholders in the industry for their consideration. Members of Mogul’s community can view the film poster, trailer, budget proposal, and financial projections. With this data transparently viewable on the blockchain, film fans can make an educated vote on production decisions. Through this community-centered process, film fans become part of the action. Crypto will make the once-elusive red carpet become accessible to anyone that wants to be on it.

From plot to premiere, Mogul Productions is bringing film fans behind the screen. ‍

Mogul Productions partners with David Bianchi and his new NFT collection, SENSES, to help shine a light on his latest masterpiece which bridges spoken word poetry and generative fine art. This will allow Mogul’s core community of film lovers the chance to get early access to one of the most anticipated NFT drops of 2022.

David Bianchi is a multi-hyphenate artist. Globally known as an actor, filmmaker, and spoken word poet. He seamlessly blends together these passions in his very own art genre he calls Spinema™ (Spinning cinema through spoken word).  These poetic-cinematic experiences are currently taking the NFT art space by storm, leading to tens of thousands of dollars being donated to charity.

As an actor/filmmaker, David has over 100 professional credits and can be seen in studio films and major network TV. His work in front of the camera has earned him membership into the very prestigious Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.

His latest collection, SENSES, is centered around 100 philosophical poems (written by David) on the human experience inspired by the five human senses. PLS&TY strategically produced the music to fit the Solfeggio frequencies, (Hz frequencies that are proven to heal the mind-body and elevate the chakras). The generative psychedelic art by technologist Dogan Demir is coded from mathematical data informed by recordings of David’s voice.  Each NFT layer is owned by the collector including a hidden layer of the poetry signed by David including global sales and publishing rights of the written poetry.

David says, “The work has a cinematic energy about it, through massive collaboration of over 20 people, original score, conceptual art and epic sound scapes. Holders will have access to an exclusive sound bath experience in Spatial plus IRL activations in major markets.”

The Mogul community will be granted 60 “Allow list” spots which will enable them to secure the SENSES NFT prior to the public sale on June 9th for 0.15 ETH, with one mint per wallet. Full info on the collection can be found here.

The allow list spots will be on a first come basis and the Mogul community will need to do the following to secure a spot:

We are excited to align with David to help support his amazing new collection SENSES, and provide our community access to some really unique NFTs. David is one of the leaders within the Film3 movement and this is an exciting first step as we continue to develop our partnership with him moving forward! Bridging Physical to Virtual With New Products and Experiences

The world is becoming more and more virtual. There is an increasingly blurred line every day between what the metaverse is and what is real. As time goes on, people are becoming more inclined by both their own choice and circumstance to virtually experience what was once physical. Through the rise of VR headsets, virtual experiences such as visiting another part of the world instantly is now possible. Over the last decade, virtual socialization has come to life – whether it is live streaming, metaverse fashion shows, or even the accessorization of digital avatars.

NFTs are part of the charge leading this transformation from physical to virtual with products and experiences. Beyond JPEGs and NBA highlight-reel moments, NFTs are being used to turn all types of once-physical experiences into digital experiences. Online communities such as The Sandbox and Decentraland are home to many token-gated social gatherings where members of NFT communities unite to do things that would not have been done virtually as little as 5 or 10 years ago. A digital “second life” is becoming more and more ubiquitous, and that digital second life is generally taking on a larger percentage of our “real life.”

Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin even goes as far as to say that our soul can be digitalized and put on the blockchain through Soulbound Tokens (SBTs). Buterin’s idea for the NFT token is that it would be non-transferable, so you can’t sell or buy them. Rather, SBTs would be credential or membership linked for items permanently attached to your identity that cannot be taken away.

Blurring the Line Between Virtual and Physical

World-famous brands such as Gucci, Dolce and Gabbana, Molson Coors, JPMorgan, and others have begun virtually planting themselves in the metaverse by simulating what was once only done in our physical life. Several examples of virtual communities and events even blur the line between virtual and physical.

The beer company Miller Lite created a metaverse bar inside of Decentraland where people 21-years-and-older enjoyed virtual beers and were given a chance to win beer for a party paid for by Miller Lite. The bar had a bouncer, a bartender, and a fridge where you could get your avatar a free beer. Attendees of the virtual bar in Decentraland were also able to collect a POAP as proof of their attendance.

Meanwhile, in China, the NFT collection Adidas Originals teamed up with Tencent Music for the TMELAND festival featuring Jay Park and MC Jin performances. The 1.3M virtual attendees could walk the catwalk, redeem sneakers, and interact with others while dressed in Adidas’ Ozworld clothing line.

Virtual items have also become physical. One example is when some of the lucky token holders of one of RTFK’s collections had a chance to grab a virtual sneaker NFT that unlocked a pair of physical sneakers created in collaboration with the world-renowned artist Fewocious. In just 7 minutes, the collection generated $3.1M.
Although there weren’t NFTs produced in this metaverse concert, one of the world’s most popular video games, Fortnite, had a series of successful concerts. Performing artists included Marshmello and Travis Scott – the latter netting a $20M collaboration which included Fortnite skins and other in-game accessories.

It is such a powerful and important time for brands to start blending their virtual and physical experiences. People want a place to turn where they can socialize while they are in their own homes.

Mogieland: Design, Perks, Utility

Mogieland, is the digital land where the Mogies NFT characters live. Mogies are created by the animators that brought The Simpsons series, The Simpsons Movie and VR attractions at Universal Studios Japan. Their unique process starts with the team digitally sculpting each Mogie. It begins with a 2D design and is then enhanced through computer graphics (CG), all part of an 8-step process before it becomes NFT ready for the multifaceted metaverse.  Erick Tran and his award-winning, transmedia production team at CHAVVO Studios have worked with major Hollywood studios including Disney, Universal, Marvel Entertainment, Sony Animation, Cartoon Network, Fox, Dreamworks, Nickelodeon, and EA.

Not only do the Mogie’s design reflect a very intrinsic, intensive artistic process, but Mogie’s utility has several unique benefits. Mogie owners gain access to perks, which include chances to be featured in an animated series, attend film premieres and concerts, and buying fashion for both your Mogie and yourself.

Mogieland’s roadmap between now and mid-2023 includes a P2E game, a land sale, figurines, and an animated series. See the entire roadmap on this post

Mogies present the opportunity to join an exclusive community of people who enjoy film, concerts, fashion and art. Each NFT is a key that unlocks access to the Mogul universe, with perks that are both real and in the metaverse.

Utilizing Your Mogul User Account

The Mogul development team is assembling the newest features for Mogul’s NFT Marketplace and ecosystem.  Ten major features have been or are about to be onboarded. A new feature will be reviewed each week over the course of ten weeks.

Mogul Development Update #9

Mogul Development Update #9

The user experience is one of Mogul’s primary objectives when developing its NFT marketplace.

Mogul puts a focus on what users can see with their accounts, and what they want to see.

After attaching their NFT/Blockchain wallets to the NFT Marketplace, users should be able to view:

  • What NFTs they own on the ETH or BSC networks.
Mogul Productions - NFT/Blockchain wallets to the NFT Marketplace
  • History of transaction they performed
Mogul Productions - NFT Marketplace
  • Auctions they place bids in
Mogul Productions - #GownsforGood 3
  • NFTs they have listed
Mogul Productions - Office
  • Stakeholder history.
Mogul Productions - Stakeholder
  • STARS Available
Mogul Productions - STARS
  • Quadratic Voting  –   Mogul has built the first ever, consumer-ready, blockchain voting system that uses quadratic votes. This gives Mogul users and STARS holders the fair ability to influence and lend their voice to which movies will get made.

Quadratic voting uses a quadratic equation to weigh votes differently. With this system, STARS token holders are assigned a certain number of votes per token they own.  For every token that a holder has, they get fewer voting credits, so large token holders with millions of coins are unable to skew the vote. It’s a square root. So say a person votes with 100 STARS, their votes will tally to 10, a person who votes with 25 will get 5 votes.

This promotes active participation in voting from all of the STARS token holders, regardless of their size, because each holder has a voice in the process. Small holders actually have a proportionally large voice; which in turn allows Mogul to gauge the sentiment across our entire community and not just a few large holders

Mogul Development - Mogul Marketplace

Mogul Partners with Bubble Maps to Offer STARS Holders Unique Data Visualization Experience

Mogul Productions, a DeFi and NFT marketplace platform for the entertainment industry, has partnered with Bubble Maps, a crypto data company. Bubble Maps helps the DeFi ecosystem become a safer place for token holders. Bubble Maps, their flagship product, provides users with an interactive way to explore on-chain data, including transfers and wallet connections. As of today, Bubble Maps supports over 200 tokens on Binance Smart Chain (BSC).

By listing STARS on Bubble Maps, Mogul is becoming more transparent and helping users access deeper information on the health of the ecosystem. Mogul will enable its community to conduct deeper research on STARS, which can be staked again, beginning from May.

Bubble Maps data analytics tool is compatible with BSC, letting BEP20 STARS holders better visualize transactions.

On Bubble Maps, each token has a unique map that displays the way top holders interact with each other, revealing deeper connections between wallets. Specifically, every wallet is represented by a bubble, whose size is proportionate to its holdings. Only the top wallets are displayed, and every interaction between them is shown on the map.

For example, here is what the map of MoonLight’s native token looks like:

While Bubble Maps lets users visualize wallet interactions in a fun way, the data analytics tool is more than just about visualizing transactions. It highlights any potential red flags related to price manipulations, suspicious large transactions, and attacks.

As a rule, the simpler the map, the healthier is the token distribution. If there are large clusters of interactions, it can be related to private sales, centralized exchanges, or suspicious activities.

Bubblemaps is a new way of exploring on-chain data through accessible and playful visuals. “Thank you Mogul for getting listed, you are showing a high level of transparency to your community.  Everyone can now analyze the distribution for your $STARS tokens!” Said Nick, CEO of Bubble Maps

The service is trusted by high-profile entities in the crypto industry, including Coinmarketcap, Coinbase, CoinGecko, and TechRate, among others.

Mogul Launches Longest Staking Program

The partnership with MoonLight comes at the right time, as Mogul launched a staking program starting on May 15. According to the program, 14 million STARS tokens will be rewarded to the community until May 2023. The staking program supports BEP20 tokens only, and users are encouraged to swap their STARS from Ethereum to BSC if they want to take part in it.

Token holders can lock their STARS for specified periods of time in order to earn a STARS reward rate, which is defined by the pool they are entering. Specifically, the rewards increase with the lockup period.

For DeFi enthusiasts, this enables token holders to lock an amount of their tokens to accumulate rewards. This creates liquidity within the ecosystem, while providing yield opportunities for stakers. On Mogul, staking rewards are received in the form of STARS tokens, and users can withdraw their rewards at any given point in time. However, if withdrawals are conducted before the predetermined lockup period requirement, users will not be eligible to claim the rewards.

Mogul hosts four reward pools for its staking program, each having a different number of STARS allocated for rewards. The reward rate per pool will vary over time. The pools are as follows: ‍

  • VIP Pool (accepted tokens: STARS) – 1,000,000 STARS are allocated for rewards. The minimum lockup period is one month, and the reward benefits will go on for three months.
  • Backstage Pool (accepted tokens: STARS) – 3,000,000 STARS are put aside for rewards. Users have to lock their STARS for no less than two months in order to be eligible for rewards, which will be given for six months.
  • Oscar’s Pool (accepted tokens: Pancake Swap STARS_BNB LP Tokens) – this pool accepts Pancake Swap LP tokens only. It has 4 million STARS allocated for rewards. The minimum lockup period is three months, and the rewards will be given for nine months.
  • Red Carpet Pool (A-List Pool; accepted tokens: STARS) – 6,000,000 STARS are reserved for this pool, which has a lockup requirement of three months at least. The rewards will be given for a period of one year.

Mogul Productions is excited to partner with Arabian Camels NFT, the $50M NFT collection behind the upcoming featured film “Antara”.

Antara is a 6th Century swords and sandals epic that is to be directed by Tarsem Singh. It tells the true story of Antara Ibn Shaddad, a black slave who won his freedom and became a knight, and one of the most famous poets in ancient Arabia. Antara became an icon of Arabic literature and a monument for the warrior code of ancient Arabia.

The vision behind Arabian Camels is to create a whole new platform and ecosystem where creators, producers, digital artists, and communities can collaborate to create something special for movie lovers.

The Arabian Camels are making noise in Cannes and Monte Carlo this year, as they present their NFT collection for the upcoming Antara movie.  Their model is leading the way toward the future of Hollywood, with their convergence of NFTs, DeFi, Web 3 community and movies.

Mogul has reserved an exclusive allotment of the Arabian Camels collection on their NFT marketplace, to help drive funding for the “Antara” movie.

This strategic partnership is designed to shine a spotlight on the fantastic work the Arabian Camels team has done, and use Mogul Productions’ platform to elevate funding and film awareness.

“A huge part of what we strive to do at Mogul is to leverage the power of the crowd to bring incredible stories to life. The story of Antara is fascinating and there has already been so much success and interest around it via the Arabian Camels NFT. We are thrilled to offer our community the chance to get involved in the action and assist in bringing the film to life,” Jake Fraser, Mogul Productions’ Head of Business Development, said.

The Power of Community and Utility in the Current Crypto Market

Since launching, Mogul has developed one of the world’s most influential NFT marketplaces. Our platform is off to a strong start with 50,000 active NFT Marketplace users in the first three months after it came online and $50M in value sent through Mogul smart contracts. Part of this success is due to the magnetization toward our community. Additionally, the amount of utility that Mogul offers to token holders through staking and other benefits is vital to the long term sustainability of the ecosystem.

Mogul has led the charge into NFTs and DeFi for artists, fans, and filmmakers everywhere by creating a crypto community around the entertainment industry. Our diverse community’s strength is apparent through collaborations with the likes of $50M feature film Antara, Grammy Award Winning Rapper Ja Rule, Academy Award winning Actress Julianne Moore, and The Simpsons Animator Erick Tran on the entertainment side, and Polygon, Chainlink, and ApeSwap on the blockchain side.

Additionally, Mogul’s new staking program is another example of how we’re building our platform with a group of people who believe in what we’re building and a community of people who are committed to building with us. Our new staking pools are an added utility that offers members of our community an incentive to hold STARS long term. We’re starting a 1-year campaign that will reward our STARS token holders who meet the holding requirements with more tokens than ever before.

The Power of Crypto Communities

The camaraderie that crypto communities offer has the potential to extend beyond kinship felt by sports enthusiasts, fans of the same musical band, or even compatriots.

Crypto communities are more empowering than other communities because they allow and incentivize actual community governance – that means the community’s constituents can make decisions that truly impact the group and themselves. In crypto communities, people can put “skin in the game” to participate in an economy where their voices are heard. Furthermore, incentivizing crypto communities with added utility can create stronger communities. Many examples of crypto communities have grown by offering added utility to token holders.

Community Examples:

  • Bored Ape Yacht Club: The company hosts real-life parties with concerts for its members that enjoy the networking as well as airdrop utility of being part of its community. Members include Jimmy Fallon and Paris Hilton. Bored Ape Yacht Club token holders stay connected through a tokengated chat and other virtual and token-holder-only events in the metaverse.
  • Permies: Crypto media company Blockworks created a collection of 555 Permie NFTs for VIP access to their 2022 Permissionless conference, lifetime access to all future Permissionless events, access to the $2,500 per year Blockworks Research platform, and a token-holder Discord with people from some of the most influential companies in Web2, Web3, and traditional finance. Business deals, job hirings, and high-level market information happen through this small crypto community that is loaded with utility.

These are just two examples of thriving crypto communities. They demonstrate that if token holders have a strong community with utility, the token can succeed. However, other ways to add utility to a community extend beyond IRL events and token airdrops. Staking is another example of added utility that can positively impact a token community.

Staking STARS and Mogul’s Film3 Community

Crypto-connected communities advance the current idea of fraternity and what it means to connect to others around a shared interest. By design, crypto communities use game theory to encourage players in a system to interact rationally. These players, the community itself, make decisions together to govern the community. They all have a shared interest because they own tokens in the community, make decisions in the community, and want to see it succeed. A bond of this magnitude is powerful.

As we execute our 2022/2023 roadmap, we are rewarding our community for staking by giving them STARS tokens in our largest staking pool yet! Users must fulfill the requirements for the minimum lockup threshold to be eligible for rewards at the specified ending time. We have 14M STARS tokens we will be rewarding our pool participants with. This program will last for an entire year to celebrate our 1st anniversary of the STARS token, a milestone we reached in May 2022!

In total, there are four different staking pools that vary based on the amount of rewards that are given, the amount of STARS tokens that are required to be staked, and the duration of time the STARS need to be staked to receive the reward. (Please note, since the reward pools are issued on every BSC block, the pool’s actual end dates are approximated to BSC’s average block time. These dates may not be exact for the end times for the pools):

  • VIP: 1M STARS | 1-Month Minimum Lockup
  • Backstage: 3M STARS | 2-Month Minimum Lockup
  • Oscar’s: 4M STARS | 3-Month Minimum Lockup
  • A-List:  6M STARS | 3-Month Minimum Lockup

Mogul empowers its community by offering a place where its community can vote on projects they want to see coming online to the market. By offering a way for the community to vote on which projects they want to see come to life, Mogul creates a diverse, incentivized platform around a shared artistic interest and shared vision. Then, Mogul incentivizes long-term participation in this community through rewards.

Mogul’s platform attracts different networks of people across Ethereum and Binance Smart Chain. Different protocols and their corresponding communities have their own unique flare.

NFT’s are strengthening the connection between filmmakers and movie fans

TechAnnouncer

The film industry has always been associated with glitz, glamor, endless talent, and juicy gossip that has entertained several generations and shows no sign of stopping. One thing this industry never had a solid reputation for, is actually connecting with the fans themselves. Of course, this has gradually showed signs of changing, as social media started taking over. But even so, the disconnect would always be there to a certain degree. This changed dramatically once Mogul Productions came to be. Mogul is a decentralized film financing (DeFiFi) and movie-based NFT platform that brings together movie fans, creators, and financiers.

This changed dramatically once Mogul Productions came to be. Mogul is a decentralized film financing (DeFiFi) and movie-based NFT platform that brings together movie fans, creators, and financiers. Mogul is an immersive and inclusive platform that is transforming how movies and other forms of art and entertainment get funded through decentralization. By extension, this allows members of its expansive community to actively participate in the production process.
